A WordPress site is not a brochure you print once. It is software, built from core files, a theme, and a stack of plugins, and every one of those gets updated, patched, and occasionally broken by the next update. AWeb Design maintenance plan is how you keep that software secure, fast, and working. But plans vary a lot, and some sold as “maintenance” are little more than a login and a monthly invoice. This guide covers what a solid plan includes.
Why maintenance is not optional
Outdated plugins and themes are one of the most common ways WordPress sites get compromised. Updates also fix bugs and keep your site compatible with new PHP versions and browsers. Skipping them for months leaves you exposed, and a site that goes down or shows a security warning costs you leads and rankings. We cover the reasons in more detail in 5 reasons to keep your WordPress website up to date.
What a good WordPress maintenance plan includes
Updates, handled carefully. WordPress core, themes, and plugins should be updated on a regular schedule, weekly or every two weeks. The important part is how. Updates should be checked for conflicts, and a backup should exist before they run. Blind auto-updates on a live site can break layouts and checkout flows.
Backups you can restore. Look for:
- Automatic backups on a schedule that fits how often your site changes
- Storage off your web server, so a server failure does not take your backups with it
- Several restore points, not just last night’s
- Proof that restores actually work
A backup nobody has tested is a hope, not a backup.
Security. A baseline should include malware scanning, a firewall, login protection, strong password and two-factor policies for admin users, and removal of unused plugins and themes. Spam protection on forms belongs here too.
Uptime monitoring. Someone or something should check your site around the clock and alert a person when it goes down. Without monitoring, you often learn about an outage from a customer.
Performance upkeep. Image compression, caching, database cleanup, and checks of load speed and Core Web Vitals keep your site from slowing down as content accumulates. Speed affects both rankings and conversions.
Technical SEO health. Broken links, redirect chains, sitemap errors, and pages accidentally blocked from Google are all maintenance issues that hurt search visibility. A plan that ignores them leaves value on the table.
Support and small changes. A set number of hours or requests for text edits, new pages, and fixes, and a clear way to reach a real person.
Reporting. A short monthly summary of what was updated, what was backed up, and any issues found.
Hosting is not maintenance
Many owners assume their web host handles all this. Most hosting plans cover the server: uptime, hardware, and sometimes a basic backup. They typically do not update your plugins, test your forms, or fix a broken layout after an update. Check what your host covers and what it does not, then fill the gap.
Red flags in a maintenance plan
- No offsite backups, or backups stored only on the same server
- “Maintenance” that means only automatic updates with no testing
- No monitoring or incident response
- No information on what is changed or when
- A long contract with no reporting
- No admin access for you to your own site
DIY or hire it out?
If you are comfortable in the WordPress dashboard, you can handle updates yourself with a good backup system and a staging site. Most owners find that the plan fails because of inconsistency, not skill. Something else always comes first until the site breaks.
Questions to ask any provider
- How often do you update, and how do you test before pushing to the live site?
- Where are backups stored, and how long are they kept?
- What happens if the site goes down at 2 a.m.?
- What counts as a small change, and what costs extra?
- Will I own and have admin access to everything?
