When someone searches for a plumber, a dentist, or a web designer near them, Google often shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. That group is called the local pack, and it captures a large share of local clicks and calls. If your competitor is in it and you are not, this post explains why and what you can change.
How Google decides who appears
Google has said publicly that local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance, distance, and prominence.
- Relevance is how well your profile matches what the person searched for. Your categories, services, description, and the content on your website all feed this.
- Distance is how far your business is from the searcher, or from the location named in the search. You cannot change this, and it explains a lot of confusing results.
- Prominence is how well known your business is. Reviews, review ratings, links to your site, mentions across the web, and your organic rankings contribute.
Those three are not equally within your control. Relevance and prominence are where the work happens.
Why you may not see what your customers see
Local results change with the searcher’s exact location. A business that ranks first when you search from your office can be invisible two miles away. Checking your own ranking from your desk, on your own account, is one of the most common ways owners fool themselves. To get an accurate picture, use a rank-tracking grid that checks several points around your service area, or have a customer in a different part of town try the search.
What to fix for relevance
- Choose the right primary category. This is the single biggest lever. “Electrician” and “Electrical contractor” are different categories that can produce different results.
- Add secondary categories for every service line you really offer, but do not pad the list with ones you do not.
- Fill out services and descriptions using the words customers search.
- Make sure your website supports it. A profile that says you offer a service while your site has no page about it sends a mixed message. Link the profile to the most relevant page, such as a city or service page, not always the homepage.
- Keep your name honest. Adding keywords to your business name violates Google’s guidelines and risks suspension.
What to fix for prominence
- Earn reviews steadily. Volume, recency, and rating all matter. A few reviews per month beats a rush of 30 followed by silence.
- Reply to every review. It shows activity and helps convert people reading them.
- Mention services and places naturally in reviews. You cannot script this, but you can ask customers to describe the job they had done.
- Fix your citations. Your name, address, and phone should match across your website, directories, and social profiles.
- Build links from local sources. Chambers, sponsorships, local news, supplier pages, and community organizations all count.
- Rank organically too. A stronger website helps your profile.
Keep the profile active
Posts, new photos, updated hours, and answered questions do not guarantee a ranking jump, but a profile that is clearly maintained tends to convert better once someone sees it. We cover the ongoing tasks in our guide to what Google Business Profile management includes.
Mistakes that cost you the pack
- A virtual office or P.O. box address, which Google can suspend
- Duplicate listings for the same business
- A service-area business showing an address it does not serve customers from
- Letting a former employee’s account stay as profile owner
- No profile photos or an outdated phone number
How long it takes
Profile corrections can show up quickly. Prominence takes longer, because reviews, citations, and links accumulate over months. If you are starting from an incomplete profile, expect to see changes in your profile views within weeks and rankings improve over the following months, assuming the competition is not also climbing.
