Local SEO in Forsyth, Gwinnett, Fulton, and DeKalb County: Targeting the Right Service Area

Most local SEO advice is written around a single city. But plenty of searches in Georgia name a county instead: “local SEO Gwinnett County,” “SEO services DeKalb County,” “Fulton County SEO.” If you serve customers across several cities, you need a plan that covers both. This post explains how county-level searches work, how our four main counties differ, and how to structure your site and Google Business Profile so you show up in the right places.

Why searchers type a county name

People use counties when they are not sure which city a business is in, when they work across city lines, or when they are looking for a provider that serves their whole area. Contractors, home service companies, medical practices, and B2B firms see this often. The searcher is saying “someone who covers my part of Georgia,” and a page that only talks about one city does not answer that.

Google does not rank businesses by county. It looks at where the searcher is, where your profile and pages say you operate, and how well your content matches the query. A county page works when it gives Google and the reader clear evidence that you serve the places inside that county.

City boundaries and county lines do not always match the way customers think. Suwanee, for example, sits mostly in Gwinnett County. Check the county before you write it on a page. A wrong county reference is one of the easiest ways to look careless to both Google and a local reader.

Service-area business or storefront?

The right approach depends on how you work.

  • Storefront with customers who come to you. Your Google Business Profile address matters most. Build a strong page for your home city, then support it with content for nearby cities customers travel from.
  • Service-area business that travels to the customer. Hide your address on the profile if customers do not visit, and list the cities you actually serve as service areas. Your site needs a page for each major market, plus a hub page that ties the county together.

If you serve more than about a dozen cities, resist the urge to list them all. Pick the five or six that drive most of your revenue and build real pages for those.

How to structure a county strategy

  1. Choose one home page per city you want to rank in. Each needs unique content: local projects, neighborhoods, landmarks, customer examples. Swapping the city name in a template does not work and can get the pages treated as thin duplicates.
  2. Add a county hub only if you serve most of the county. It should link to the city pages and explain your coverage in plain language.
  3. Set service areas in your Google Business Profile to match the cities on your site.
  4. Use areaServed in your LocalBusiness schema to state your counties and cities in structured data.
  5. Earn local signals in each market. Reviews that mention the city or neighborhood, local chamber memberships, and local business citations all help.
  6. Link between your own pages. City pages should link to the county hub and to related services.

Mistakes we fix most often

  • City pages that are copies of each other with the name swapped
  • The wrong county named on a city page
  • A service area list of 40 cities and no real page for any of them
  • No schema, or schema listing a different address than the Google Business Profile
  • Targeting a county no customer would ever search, instead of the cities that drive calls

A quick way to check your coverage

Search your main service plus each county name, in a private window, and see who appears. Then check the top results for the one thing they have that you do not: a dedicated page, local reviews, or clear service-area content. That gap is your to-do list.
